Rhian Bellamy's Story

Rhian Bellamy's Story

Rhian has been a community volunteer with us in Swansea since last November.

Working as a first responder in Killay, she often works on incidents with our crew and sees first-hand the difference that the service makes, and wanted to help out in any way possible. She regularly visits the airbase to meet those who have raised money for us, attends fundraising events and bucket collections - her family even help out too!

Andrew and Maureen Catling's Story

Andrew and Maureen Catling's Story

Andrew and Maureen from Knighton, Powys, have been community volunteers with us since 2006, after being inspired at a local talk about our charity.

Andrew often gives WAA talks and presentations, and has even done one in Spain, where he spoke to 300 members of the Royal British Legion about the work that we do! He and his wife Maureen also help out by selling our merchandise, attending fundraising events, and distributing collection tins so that people can donate to us. Check out the above video, where Andrew talks about why he volunteers for us and his role within the community!

Chris Evans' Story

Chris Evans' Story

Chris from Colwyn Bay has been a community volunteer with us for the past 18 months in Conwy and Denbighshire.

He formerly coordinated ambulances across Denbighshire as the region’s locality officer, and was inspired to help our charity after seeing an air ambulance presentation he arranged as chair of the NHS Retirement Fellowship in North Wales. Chris said: “I like to help in any way I can and it’s great to meet other supporters. So many have been affected in some way, whether they’ve seen a neighbour or relative airlifted, or maybe even been hurt themselves. “We simply don’t know when we’ll need an air ambulance, and that’s why I volunteer.” Here he is helping to sell merchandise recently with our clinical and operations manager Jason Williams.

Kristian Matthews' Story

Kristian Matthews' Story

Kristian from Neath has been a volunteer photographer with us since February this year.

Within just a few months, he has taken photos at our airbase, fundraising events, and shop launches and celebrations. Kristian said: “From a young age I’ve had an interest in everything involving aviation, and have recently wanted to take my photography skills further. “By volunteering I’m able to gain experience in photography while supporting a great charity – it’s such a good opportunity.” Here’s Kristian when he recently volunteered his photography skills at the opening of our charity shop in Port Talbot, with our mascot HEMS Huw!

Elsie Thomas' Story

Elsie Thomas' Story

Elsie has been a volunteer in our Caernarfon shop since 2009, where she operates the tills, manages stock, and is a friendly and welcoming face for customers

Elsie also volunteers at Ysbyty Gwynedd, a hospital that our helicopters often visit, where she works on the desks and visits the wards, chatting with patients to cheer them up. For her 90th birthday back in December, fellow volunteers at the shop threw her a surprise party there! Read all about it here

John Hardwick's Story

John Hardwick's Story

John has been a community volunteer with us in Pembrokeshire since 2006.

As a qualified pilot, he appreciates the work of our crew and wanted to support us in any way possible. He gives WAA talks and presentations, attends fundraising events, runs our stalls of merchandise, and helps to spread the word of the work we do within the community. He’s also volunteering his time to us by taking part in fundraising events - and will be abseiling down the walls of Pembroke Castle on 29th June! Best of luck to him.

Chris Hallchurch's Story

Chris Hallchurch's Story

Chris has been an administration volunteer with us in our Swansea office since 2006, helping to send out letters, process donations, and register new members of our Lifesaving Lottery scheme.

She decided to volunteer with us after she retired because she wanted to give something back, and we were her chosen charity as she’s seen our helicopter in action and thinks the work we do is fantastic! Chris recently received an award for volunteering with us for more than 5 years, and was presented a medal at our airbase by the Lord Mayor of Swansea June Stanton and our chairman Dave Gilbert.
